Beginners Web Programming Using Ruby on Rails
This class introduces the basic ideas of web application programming, using the Rails framework, presenting a distilled summary of the RailsGuides Getting Started Guide. You are welcome to read the course material ahead of the class; it also has pointers to more advanced topics that you can start exploring on your own.
We will also help you with any Ruby on Rails installation issues you may have encountered, if you bring along your laptop. The course instructors are also offering a 12 week Rails programming course starting in the fall, if you're interested in continuing your Rails journey!
Pre-Requisites
We will assume no familiarity with the Rails framework, but will assume you are comfortable with technical ideas like data manipulation and cloud-based servers. Familiarity with Ruby concepts and syntax will help - we'll point those out as we along. Ruby beginners material is covered in our Ruby Beginners Level 1 class.
The code we'll discuss is also available on Github.
Installing Ruby and Rails
Before class, install Ruby and Rails on your system, getting as far as you can following these instructions:
The Rails guides above also summarize these steps.
